Hi !

Present ages -
Mother = x years
Daughter = y years

Ages 4 years ago :-
Mother = x -4 yrs
Daughter = y - 4 yrs

given ,
x-4 = 4(y-4)
x - 4 = 4y - 16

x - 4y = -16+4
x - 4y = -12                 ---> [1]
==================================

after 6yrs , their ages ,
Mother = x +6 yrs
Daughter = y +6 yrs

given ,

x + 6 = 2 1/2 ( y + 6 )
x + 6 = 5/2(y +6)

x + 6 = 5/2y + 15

x - 5/2y = 15 - 6

x - 5/2y =9            -----> [2]

----------------------------------------------

subtracting equation 1 from 2

      x - 5/2y = 9
 -    x - 4y = -12
------------------
    3/2y = 21                                      [ -5/2 - (-4y) = -5/2 +4y = -5/2 + 8/2 = 3/2y]

y  = 21 x 2/3
    = 14 yrs

age of daughter = 14 yrs

mother' age =
 x - 4y = -12

x - 56 = -12
x = -12 + 56

x = 44
mother's age =  44 yrs
