“This morning
the beautiful white heron
was floating along above the water
and then into the sky of this
the one world
we all belong to
where everything
sooner or later
is a part of everything else
which thought made me feel
for a little while
quite beautiful myself.”
— Mary Oliver, Poem of the One World

In many circles, February is often referred to as love month. So much of this short month’s personality is fashioned after it’s fourteenth day, for Valentines Day, like many a holiday, has a way of eclipsing all the days leading up to it.
Though February fourteenth is officially reserved for couples and lovers, I can’t help but spend the month writing and mailing out love notes to all my cherished friends. Receiving sweet cards or simple valentines in the mail is such a unique form of encouragement and February is the perfect month to get back into the old-fashioned habit.
And while we’re writing love notes, why not take a moment to compose an ode to the things we love best? This poem by Mary Oliver, a love note to the sea, strikes such a lovely chord.
