Don’t pull the string 

for the flag may unravel 
strand by strand 
only by your hands 

Never will the colors run
they can’t get washed 
by the rain 

but careless hands 
that take for granted 
the blood and sacrifice

etched in every star 
sewn into every stripe 
all the hardship and strife 

those hands be they wealthy
or covered in dirt 
can unravel the flag 

and the Union it represents
