The point group of [PtCl4]2- is D4h.

(a) What is the reducible representation of the sigma bonding in the complex?

(b) What are the irriducible representations of the sigma bonding?

Point group of ptcl4.

  • P4 is the point group of PtCl4. The 6s orbital on Pt has the symmetry species S2. Px, Py, and Pz, respectively, are the symmetry species (irreducible representations) of the 6px, 6py, and 6pz orbitals on Pt.
  • PtCl4, trans-N2F4, SF6, and benzene all have centres of symmetry, whereas H2S, cis-N2F4, and SiH4 do not.
  • As a result, [PtCl4]2-hybridization is dsp2. Theoretically, complex should be tetrahedral rather than square planar. However, because of Pt's size, the ligand and metal establish a solid link. As a result, there is intense electrostatic attraction between the Pt electron and the ligand, leading to intense crystal field splitting.
  • The inorganic compound of platinum and chlorine with the empirical formula PtCl4 is known as platinum(IV) chloride. Platinum is present in the 4+ oxidation state in this dark solid.
  • [PtCl4]2- hybridization is square-planar. Six valence electrons make up platinum. Platinum has gained two extra electrons, as indicated by the symbol (2-). To complete its octet, the chlorine atom needs one additional electron.
