The demand for separate electorates was communal and could undermine the unity among people and weaken the struggle for freedom. Gandhiji was against such provisions.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah was willing to give up demand for separate electorates but on some conditions.

If Muslims were assured of proper representation through reservation of seats in Central Assembly and representation in Muslim majority regions of Bengal and Punjab according to the propotion of their population there.

sujalabhinav74: it would be good if they would have been provided with reservation in Punjab and Bengal this would not have resulted in the formation of pak and bangla. But then Jinnah would have more chances of becoming PM then nehru
Simplebeing: Jinnah had becime communal and ultimately division was must as the two nation theory was based on auch a proposition demanding separate nation for Muslims.
