In Act IV of "The Merchant of Venice" Portia as a lawyer of Antonio makes the proposal of giving Shylock triple the amount he had taken from him. This was her initial attempt to influence Shylock so as to overlook the forfeiture. Shylock didn't agree to this proposal and insisted on having his bound. Shylock wanted the pound of flesh from Antonio and not the money.
