Hey Friend,

Here, we are talking about ocean currents!
Warm currents along the coast make the coastal areas warmer and cold currents make them cooler than usual.
The water mass, i.e. seas and oceans retain heat for a longer period. Equatorial waters remain hot and give rise to hot currents. The winds from the oceans and ocean currents transport the heat.

Warm currents flow from equatorial to polar latitudes transporting warm water to cooler regions.

The ports of Western coast of Europe are washed by the warm North Atlantic Drift which raises their winter temperature.
Due to the influence of the Warm Drift, the ports on the western coast of Europe remains open during the winter season.

Hope it helps!

Answer:

Warm ocean currents like the Westerlies travel  all the way from  equator to eastern coast of north america and western coast of Europe during winter. As the  westerlies are warm currents originate from equator and travel towards western European coast, western European ports remain ice free during winter.
