All matter consists of indivisible particles called atoms. Atoms of the same element are similar in shape and mass, but differ from the atoms of other elements. Atoms cannot be created or destroyed. Atoms of different elements may combine with each other in a fixed, simple, whole number ratios to form compound atoms. All matter is made of atoms. Atoms are indivisible and indestructible. Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms. A chemical reaction is a rearrangement of atoms.John Dalton (1766-1844) was an English scientist who studied chemistry, physics, and meteorology. Dalton progressed the field of chemistry when he proposed his atomic theory, which was made up of five postulates (statement of truth without proof). The relative number and kinds of atoms are constant in a given compound. So Atoms of a given element are not identical in mass or chemical properties. This is not a Postulate of atomic theory.
