This disease is caused by potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd). Of the many disease caused by viroids these were the first to be recognised and studied by the plant pathologists.

This viroid primarily affects potato and tomato. The growth of the infected plants may be reduced or in some cases may cease completely.

The infected plant may have smaller leaves and will tend to be more upright than their healthy counterparts.
