The product formed is 2,2dichloropentane.
- When pentyne is treated with one molecule of HCl, the chloride ion interacts with the triple bond of pentyne to form 1 chloropentene.
- This product that is formed is now treated with another molecule of HCl, the chloride ion will interact with the double bond present in pentene to form 2,2 dichloropentane.
- Therefore pentyne, a triple bond compound got converted to single bond compound.
- This reaction is used to convert triple bond to single bond.
