Preetha was observing live cells of onion in the biology laboratory and she observed cell wall,
cytoplasm and nucleus clearly. Suddenly her friend who was doing chemistry experiment spilled
a few drops of salt water on the slide. After sometime Preetha observed the slide and found some
changes. (a) What would have been the change in the live cells of onion peel after adding salt
water? (b) Name the type of process.

Answer:

Explanation:the cells will shrink as salt water is a hypertonic solution and has less water concentration than the cell

therefore the water from cell will pass into the salt water through exo osmosis

and thus the cells will shrink.

The process is EXO OSMOSIS

The living onion cell gets plasmolyzed after keeping it in saltwater, and this process is known as plasmolysis.

  • A living plant cell has a cell wall placed in a hypertonic solution, and the water from the cytoplasm is lost.
  • The salt solution is more concentrated than the cytoplasm, so exosmosis occurs.
  • Due to the water loss cytoplasm of the cell shrinks away from the cell wall making the cell plasmolyzed.
  • Between the cell and cytoplasm, the solution gets filled.
  • This process is known as plasmolysis and is reversible.
