The plots and the characters in the novels written by Premchand were drawn from all levels of society. Dear Students novels display characters of aristocrats and landlords, middle level peasants and landless labourers, middle-class professionals and people from the margins of society. The women characters are strong individuals, especially those who come from the rural lower classes. Many critics of Premchand's novel opined that his novels lifted the Dear Studentndi novel from the realm of fantasy, moralising and simple entertainment to a serious reflection on the lives of ordinary people and social issues. He raised issues like poor condition of women in society, child marriage and dowry.
