Preparation: -
- Collect plant specimens you wish to identify and preserve
- Place the plant specimen under a huge book or some newspapers,do this for 15 - 20 days
- Make sure the leaf has no exposure to sunlight
- Afterwards,stick the plant specimens on a herbarium sheet with the help of a cello tape,this can be done in definite patterns and orientation also
- Lastly,write your name,date and place of collection,common name and scientific name of the plant
Importance
- Herbaria helps to identify the plants for their study
- Herbarium helps to establish phylogenetic relationships between different plants
- It provides information about its location, ecology, characteristics etc

What is herbarium?
Herbarium is a store house of plants species where it is collected, pressed, dried and preserved.
Special Points:-
- It is a quick referral system.
- The standard size of herbarium is 11.5×16.5 inches.
The steps of preparing herbarium are :-
1. Collection of the plant species.
2. Drying or pressing.
3. Poisoning by the addition of ethyl chloride.
4. Mounting, itching and labelling in which the dates, local names and scientific names are assigned to the preserved species.
5. Deposition by phylogenic or in India by Berman and Hooker classification.
