Preparation of the soil involves turning and loosening the soil. This process has the following advantages.

1. Loose soil allows the roots to penetrate deeper thus securing the plant more firmly.

2. Loose soil has a lot of air trapped in it, which is used by the roots to breathe easily.

3. Loose soil helps the growth of earthworms and microbes in the soil. Dead plants and animals get decomposed by soil organisms.

In this way, various nutrients held in the dead plantsand animals are released back into the soil. These nutrients are again absorbed by the plants.. This process of decomposing also further loosens the soil.

4. Turning and loosening of soil brings nutrients-rich soil to the top. Plants can The process of loosening and turning of the then absorb more nutrients.

This process of loosening and turning of the soil is called tilling or ploughing. It is carried out by using a wooden or iron plough which is oulled either by animals or by tractor. The ploughed field may have big pieces of soil called crumbs. These are broken with a plank. The field is also levelled with a leveller for sowing as well as for irrigation purposes.

A plough contains a curved triangular iron strip called ploughshare. It is attached to a long log of wood known as a ploughshaft. There is a handle at one end of the shaft. The other end is attached to a beam which is placed on the bulls' necks. One pair of bulls and a man can easily operate the plough.

Nowadays single plough is not used any more. This has been replaced by a series of curved blades called cultivator which can be attached with a tractor. The use of cultivator saves both time and labour.

For loosening soil and removing weeds another implement called hoe is also used. It has a long rod of wood or iron. A strong, broad and curved blade is fixed to one of ends.
