While teaching a kid we never think that what exactly we are teaching.

As the matter of fact, if they're native, they have already used  "a" and "the" accurately at  98% of the time.

So, the question arises are we teaching them to name themselves?

The new Core Standards don't need to ask kids to name them.

They are concerned only on the ability for using these elements of grammatically.

If kids are making mistakes using any articles, construct some sentences similar to the ones they're making.

Provide them with cards with "a", "an" and "the" printed on it, in groups, and let one member of the group come and put the right card in the right place in the sentence.

Then have them in framing sentences within their groups with blanks.

Exchange the procedure and let other groups try to complete them.

Thus, they'll learn more from constructing sentences then they would do some worksheet or drill.
