List of activities that need to be taken care of by the administrators for camp management
Even when all facilities are available and plans worked out, there will be panic and chaos unless there is someone to manage the activities.
Therefore, it is important that a group of people are made to volunteer to assist the President of the committee formed. The function of the committee is to prepare a list of activities for use before, during and after the disaster.
A lot of information has to be collected to be ready for any disaster. First of all find out the answers for the following to see how prepared you are :
(a) How safe is the school building ? Get an engineer to check the foundation unsafe beams, any leakage or any heavy furniture that could cause injury.
(b) Are there enough evacuation routes and are the fire extinguishers in proper condition.
(c) Can an ambulance or fire tender reach the school.
(d) Practicing of mock drills.
(e) Emergency list, important phone numbers of the fire station, district magistrate, police station, hospital, civil defence Warden should be noted down and displayed.
(f) Find out the disasters that your school is vulnerable to.
One has to remain calm during the disaster. it is now that the preparation of the administration is tested. He has to see how his team members perform their work. His decisions have to be quick otherwise a lot of damage can be done. it is the job of the camp manager to co-ordinate the activities of the various departments and solve the many problems that arise. lt is his duty to assure the people or students that they are being looked after well and gain their confidence. At this time the people are looking for a leader or a person in whom they.can have faith.
Actual activity begins after the disaster. People are traumatised as they have lost members of their families or they are suffering themselves. They have no food, money or shelter. lt is the duty of the camp organisers to provide the people these basic amenities. it is at this time that social workers, teachers, students and NGOs step in.
The camp manager must inform all these organisations to come to their help to get rid of the trauma the people have gone through. The help given should be wisely used so that there is no wastage or corruption. With the help ofa loudspeaker the people can be told what to do and things that can be avoided. Community kitchens and medical camps can be set up, search and rescue teams mobilised, adequate shelter and toilet facilities provided and updated warnings issued from time to time.
The government steps in with financial help only after the basic problems are over. if the people have been adequately prepared then the problems are overcome faster.
