The people of Assam speak languages of three language groups namely – Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman, and Austroasiatic.

The official languages of the state are Assamese and Bodo. Apart from these languages, some native languages of Tibeto-Burman origin and directly related to Bodo are also spoken. They are Tiwa, Dimaca, Rabha, Karbi, and Mishing. Small ethnic groups of the state speak other languages like Tai-Khamti, Tai-Aiton, and Tai-Phake. The origin of these languages is the Tai group of languages of South East Asia and Southern China. Other languages like Manipuri, Kuki, Garo, Hmar, and Khasi are also spoken in the state.
