Answer:

Plants have hormone-like signalling molecules, like the auxins, that regulate growth. They are produced by the plant naturally to encourage, for example, extending roots, or growing taller, or leafier.

Synthetic auxins can either be copies of the natural molecules or entirely man-made molecules that do the same or similar things. One example of a synthetic auxin is2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid.

In some applications, at lower concentrations, this molecule can cause a plant cell from a part of the plant to grow as if it were a seed. In higher concentrations, it kills plants by causing uncontrolled growth, and can be used as a herbicide to kill weeds.

The obvious advantage of using synthetic plant “hormones” is you can control how and when and where they grow !

The advantages and disadvantages of artificial plant hormones are as follows:

Advantages of artificial plant hormones

  • The main reason behind using artificial plant hormones is to increase productivity and enhance the quality of the crops and these hormones do help to achieve this purpose.
  • These hormones fasten the ripening of fruits and vegetables.
  • Leads to early breakage of seed and bud dormancy.
  • Increases the absorption surface by inducing the growth of root and root hairs.
  • Can stimulate the chloroplast formation in leaves.

Disadvantages of artificial plant hormones

  • Plant hormones are very expensive and hence, everyone cannot have access to them easily.
  • Though hormones fasten ripening, supplying large amounts of hormones can also cause the fruits and vegetables to rotten faster.
  • Excess amounts of hormones cause lodging and thus reduce the quality of the produce.
  • Over usage can also promote apical dominance, steam, and leaf malformation.
