Area and perimeter of two-dimensional figures
Introduction : Any kind of two dimensional geometrical shape has two definite properties which are - 1) Area 2) Perimeter.
Area is the amount of two dimensional space that is occupied by a geometrical shape. Perimeter is the total length of the outer edges of a geometrical shapes.
Types of figures : The determination of the area and perimeter of any geometrical shape is totally dependent on it's type of figure. Basically, there are two types of geometrical figures - 1) Regular and 2) Irregular. The following discussion will guide about the area and perimeter calculations for both types of geometrical figures.
Determination of area and perimeter :
Regular shapes :
- Square : Area = (side)² , Perimeter = (4×side)
- Rectangle : Area = (length × width) , Perimeter = {2×(length + width)}
- Triangle : Area = ½ × base × height (general formula) , Perimeter = (1st side + 2nd side + 3rd side)
- Circle : Area = πr², Circumference = 2πr
- Ellipse : Area = π × major axis × minor axis , Circumference = 2π √{(Major axis² + Minor axis²)/2}
Irregular shapes :
- Area = The area of irregular geometrical shapes can be calculated by dividing the irregular shaped into smaller regular shapes which have definite formula for calculating area. Later, we just need to add those smaller region's area.
- Perimeter = The perimeter can be calculated by adding length of the all existing sides of the irregular geometrical shape.
Conclusion : By, this project we gained a vivid knowledge about the process of area and perimeter calculations of different types of two dimensional geometrical shapes. Although there are many other types of scenario also related to this topic, but we have considered the most common cases here.
