Artificial food colourings are used to add bright colors to food dishes, drinks, as well as medications and its consumption is constantly increasing. They are however blamed to cause serious side effects on human health, such as hyperactivity in children, as well as cancer and allergies. But due to opposing opinions, they are highly controversial. Earlier, they were made from coal tar. Now they are made from chemical substances and even from petroleum. Many colourings have been used so far, but most of them were found toxic and only a few are used now, such as beta carotene and beet extract. Most of colourings in use are Red No. 3 (Erythrosine), Red No. 40 (Allura Red), Yellow No. 5 (Tartrazine), Yellow No. 6 (Sunset Yellow), Blue No. 1 (Brilliant Blue) and Blue No. 2 (Indigo Carmine). Most of the colourings used now have been well tested for toxicity in animal studies and regulatory agencies like FDA and EFSA have certified them as safe. But, everyone do not agree with this and so some colourings certified as safe in one country, are banned in another, making it extremely confusing to conclude on their safety. For example, Green No. 3 (Fast Green) is allowed in USA, but banned in Europe, while Quinoline Yellow, Carmoisine and Ponceau are allowed in Europe but banned in USA. If you wonder whether you should avoid food dyes, then you may get your allergy or other health reports checked by your doctors and ask for advice to check if you are more vulnerable than others. Hence it is always advised to avoid colourings, but the final decision is only upto you. Your and your child’s health is in your hands.
