Masdar city is constructed as a zero-carbon, zero-waste, car-free city in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The city will depend primarily on solar energy for its power.

Energy source for the city

- Several photo-voltaic power plants will be located in and around the city.

- Solar panels will be integrated into the majority of the city’s architecture and outdoor spaces.

- Concentrated solar thermal power will be generated by using mirrors to focus sunlight and create steam.

Concentrated solar power

1. Concentrated solar power (CSP) systems use mirrors to focus a large area of sunlight onto a much smaller area.

2. Reflectors, or heliostats, reflect sunlight onto a central receiver which stores heat as molten salt.

3. This in turn generates steam which drives a steam turbine and electricity is produced.

Concentrated solar power mainly uses the unique aspect that mainly mirrors the focus a large area of sunlight in smaller area.

Concentrated light is converted into heat so that it would mainly drive the heat engine that is especially connected on electrical power generator.

Solar panels are used to trap solar energy with the solar power technology coupled with thermal energy storage (TES).
