Jharkhand have various coalmines and most of them are situated in Hazaribag, Chatra, Palamau, Rajmahal, Dhanbad and Ranchi district.

Damodar River and its tributaries flow through these areas and due to extensive coal mining and growth of coal industries the water resources of these areas are badly contaminated.

Some indigenous communities including the Santhals and Mundas are affected by the contaminated water sources and there is no purified drinking water available in these zones.

They are suffering from water borne diseases.
