Excavations carried out in very recent times at Keezhadi, in Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu suggest that a very early civilisation existed there on the banks of River Vaigai.

Carbon dating of artefacts found at this site suggests that the settlements existed there around 200 BCE. Artefacts that have been dug out during the excavations include intricate jewellery, fine game stones, semi-precious stones and several Tamil Brahmi inscriptions.

Potteries, tools made of bones, weapons made of iron and roof tiles are among the artefacts. Inscriptions found on potteries are of Tamil Brahmi script. It is thought that the excavated city belonged to the Sangam Age.

The explorations carried out by Archaeological survey of India in Keezhadi in Sivaganga district unveiled the proof of urban civilisation that existed in Tamil Nadu since the Sangam age, which was established by Carbon Dating of charcoal found in the site in February 2017. The third phase of announcements has also been announced. 
A total of 72 potsherds with Tamil Brahmin Script were found, which has several Tamil names.
