We Are Not Slaves”: Female Shoe and Textile Workers in Marblehead, Massachusetts, 1860

On George Washington’s birthday, 1860, the largest industrial strike to date in the United States started in Lynn, Massachusetts, a coastal town north of Boston. The efforts of the Lynn strikers encouraged shoe and textile workers—including many women—in the nearby town of Marblehead. In Marblehead, as in Lynn, workers invoked the republican values of the American revolution to press their cause. Carrying banners proclaiming “we are not slaves,” they referred both to the rhetorical slavery employed by revolutionary leaders and to the real slave system that would collapse in the imminent Civil War. The New York Times reporter who wrote this article, however, was less interested in the historical resonance of the events he witnessed than he was in the loss of revenue to Lynn merchants, the novelty of women gathering in public, and having a good time with his Boston colleagues.

Answer:

                  Women are not slaves

Good morning everyone present here. I am going to expatiate on ‘Women are not slaves’. Gone are the days when women were synonymous with frailty. The famous Shakespearean phrase ‘Frailty, thy name is woman’ is no longer relevant in modern times.

Gone are the days when women were kept as slaves and had no say in families and society. They were subservient to man’s will and decisions. Women have come a long way from the era of women slavery. They not only dominate and outsmart men in all areas of life, but also have excelled them.

The modern era is the era of women empowerment. Women are perfectly suitable for any sphere of action ---  sport, adventure, exploration, and any field. Women have already proved their mettle all spheres. Space exploration, research and development, science and medicine, politics, financing, management, education, and whatnot, women have set higher standards than man.

Indian women have always been exceptionally talented. They have contributed equally in bettering the society since ancient times. However, their recent success stories have been quite impressive! Kalpana Chawala, Sunita Williams, Mery Com, Sania Mirja, Saina Nehwal, Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Roy, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, and P.V. Sindhu, the list is endless. The Indian women are stunning the world with their extraordinary talents. They have left men far behind in the field of academic excellence. At schools, their performance in examinations and other co-curricular activities eclipse boys. There is more number of women teachers. Even in other fields such as politics, industry, defense, space exploration, and research and development, they have made their presence felt. Recently first batch of women fighter pilots was commissioned in the Indian Air Force. All these are positive indicators of what they are capable of. Well the future is really very bright for them.

It is matter of great pride that many women scientists are project leaders at ISRO and DRDO. They have successfully led many missions into space and missile test fires. ISRO has brought unprecedented laurels to the nation by its successful Mars Mission, 104 satellites launch in one lift-off, and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III), on 5 June 2017. Women such as Ritu Karidhal, Deputy Operations Director, Mars Orbiter Mission, Nandini Harinath, Deputy Operations Director, Mars Orbiter Mission, Anuradha TK, Geosat Programme Director at Isro Satellite Centre have played pivotal role in this humongous success. In the much talked about Chandaryan Mission 2 mission women scientists played quite a significant role.

In conclusion it can be said that women are not slaves at all; rather they have become the queens of their life.
