Preperation:
Potash alum is prepared by dissolving an equimolar mixture of hydrated aluminium sulphate and potassium sulphate in minimum amount of water containing a little of sulphuric acid and then subjecting the resulting solution to crystallisation, when octahedral crystals of potash alum separate out.
Properties:
Aluminium-based alums have a number of common chemical properties. They are soluble in water, have a sweetish taste, react acidic to litmus, and crystallize in regular octahedron. In alums each metal ion is surrounded by six water molecules.
Potash alum is used in medicine mainly as an astringent (or styptic) and antiseptic. Alum's antiperspirant and antibacterial properties contribute to its traditional use as an underarm deodorant.
