Presence of rhizoids in place of true roots is characteristic of Bryophyta.

In the lower members of plant kingdom, like bryophyte and algae, the extensions of the lower epidermal cells are known as rhizoids.

These rhizoids are structurally and functionally much similar to the root hairs of the better developed plants.

The rhizoids can be both unicellular and multicellular; while roots of vascular plants are always multicellular.

The threads of rhizoids absorb water by capillary action from the soil, for the nutrition of the bryophytes.
