Present continuous
To describe an action that is happening at the time of speaking
eg:- the boys are playing
To describe an action on over a period of time,including the present but may not be going on at the time of speaking.
eg:- I am learning French.
To describe an action which is going to take place in future
eg:- I am leaving for Bangalore tomorrow
Past continuous
To describe an action going on at a point of time or over a period of time in past
eg:- I was resting the whole day
To describe an action which was in progress when another action took place
eg:- the light went out while I was reading.
