Making English as optional in schools isn't a good idea, as today English became a door to foreign businesses and global economies. English is now a global language and very easy to learn, how will you communicate with a person whose mother tongue is Chinese? So here English comes as a communication bridge. English is the language when there is language gap even in cities of South India and North Eastern Part of India where for them English is not only a language, but a hope for better living in other areas of India, and world as they have a language spoken by very few people. A person who is proficient and comfortable with this global language can get a better job and more salary than the one who doesn't, at Public and Private sector as well as government sector.

NO, the English language should be mandatory in schools, because it is important that Americans have one language in which they can all communicate. Most business and government services are conducted in English. It would be a disservice to students to not require them to learn the language that will allow them to find jobs.
