Rajdeep here...

The President of India is elected indirectly by the members of the Electoral College, which consists of the members of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and the Legislative Assembly.

The major functions of the President are:
1. The President has the power to declare war or peace.

2. The President can promulgate ordinances when the Parliament is not in session.

3. The President summons and prorogues the Parliament (on advice of the Cabinet) and may dissolve the Lok Sabha.

4. The Contingency Fund is placed at the disposal of the President.

5. When no leader of political parties in the Lok Sabha enjoys majority support, the President may appoint a Prime Minister who he thinks can get support of other parties too, thus forming a Coalition Government (Manmohan Singh was elected this way).

6. A Money bill cannot be introduced in the Lok Sabha without the prior approval of the President.

Hope my answer is satisfactory!
Thanks...
