The North-East Area Recognition Act of 1971, which was passed by the approval of the members of the parliament, gifted statehood to Meghalaya which had very little autonomy within Assam during the mentioned time. After its inauguration was done as a state by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who was serving her second term tenure at the office of the Prime Minister, a legislative assembly was created for Meghalaya itself.
