A girder placed horizontally such that it experience the tension as well as the compression as it supports the load on it. The top "flange" of girder experiences the force of compression while the other bottom "flange" always experiences the force of tension due to which the web between the top and bottom flange faced the least force or stress.
" concentrated top and bottom part of a girder is called flange"
Stress applied can be determined by force/area.
