Undoubtedly, Private Quelch was incorrigible in showing off. No doubt he worked very hard to secure stripe and then commission for himself. However, there were some bad qualities in him that led to his downfall. The factors that led to the decline of Private Quelch were his boastful attitude, lack of etiquette, decency, decorum, and respect for seniors.
During the musketry training, he interrupted the trainer and corrected him about the exact speed of the bullet when it was fired. He interrupted his instructors quite frequently.
Fortunately, the musketry trainer ignored his impudence. But Corporal Turnbull could not be trifled with. When the Professor tried to correct Corporal Turnbull while he was giving a training lecture on hand grenades, the latter got offended. He invited the Professor to give the lecture in his stead. After the session he made a declaration. He told the platoon that he was assigning the permanent cook-house duties to the Professor.
In spite of the punishment he received from Corporal Turnbull, he did not mend his ways. Even at kitchen he would lecture his assistant cooks on unscientific and unhygienic method of peeling potatoes. These incidents prove he was an incorrigible show off.
