Take LCM of the time taken by both pipes i.e. 4 and 2 = 4 Capacity of P1 = 4/4 = 1

Capacity of P2 = 4/2 = 2

Time taken to fill the bucket if pipes are opened alternately

= ( Capacity of P1 ) × 1 = 1 i.e. P1 will fill 1 part in first hour

( Capacity of P2 ) × 1 = 2 i. e. P2 will 2 part in second hour

if opened alternately,

in two hours , it will be filled 3 parts

in the third hour,

P1 will be opened so again 1 part will be filled.
