Problems
1)The cell Cu Cu2+ (7.5 x 10- M) || Ag+ (1.26 x 10-2 M) Ag has a resistance of 4.25
ohm. Calculate the initial potential if this cell is to be operated with a current 0.028 A.
2)Consider a cell consisting of Cu electrode in contact with Cu2+ ions (1 M), a Cd
electrode in contact with Cd2+ ions (1 M) and a connecting salt bridge. The cell has a
resistance of 4 ohms.
a) Calculate the potential needed to develop a current of 0.02 amperes in the
electrolytic cell.
b) Calculate the potential when 0.02 A is developed in the galvanic cell.
3) A solution is 0.015 M in Sn (II), 0.18 M in BiCĪ, and 0.1 M in KCI.
a) Using 1 x 10-6 M as the criterion for quantitative removal, say whether this
separation of Sn and Bi is possible.
b) If it is feasible, establish the range (vs SCE) within which the cathode potential
should be maintained.
