I have always been and will be excited to watch the Republic Day parade every year just like millions more who share my view. I will try and answer your questions and let you decide if it is overrated.

Is the Parade necessary? A resounding YES!

What better platform to honour the Martyrs for their exceptional courage?
The Republic Day is an occasion to project India's strengths and its cultural heritage.
The tableaus of different states showcase a sense of unity in diversity.
Unique folk dances performed by children every year and Mind blowing motorcycle stunts performed by the daredevils are visually enthralling.
I can not watch BSF's Camel Contingent march with such discipline staying here in South India.
National bravery awards to children with the whole nation watching.
The NCC cadets selected from all over the country consider it an honour to participate in the parade.
Airforce flypast and stunts excites many.
The sight of men in uniform marching following strict military discipline is awe-inspiring. A great motivation for youngsters to join the Armed Forces that are severely understaffed.
The Republic Day Parade has become an emblem of national pride and patriotic fervor.
Why are weapons like tanks and all needed?

Display of Weapons is very much necessary to let the world know that we possess advanced weapons and are capable of using them when the need arises if India's sovereignty is threatened (Refer 2 unstable borders with Pakistan and China).

I think that's just showoff.

This very statement offended me and obviously many more and yet we choose not to be on the offensive because we respect your right to freedom of speech & expression (A fundamental right that is guaranteed by the very document that we are celebrating on this Day - The Indian Constitution - Supreme Law of India).

Why do they spend so much time and civilians money on such activities?
Now this is a point that has to be taken seriously and i am in agreement. According to an RTI, India spent Rs. 320 Crore in 2014 for the parade which is an exorbitant amount. One can not justify such huge spending for an event spanning such a short time.
