Rajesh Verma is a tailor by profession. His shop in Mahamai Ka Bagh does not have a cabinet, Something unusual for a tailor's shop. He places all the belongings on an open shelf some eight feet above. Because, come monsoon and the slightest showers could lead to flooding and waterlogging.
"Anything below five feet can get submerged," says Verma.
Mahamai Ka Bagh area is among the most flood-prone area in the state capital during monsoons. Each year, there are scores of distress calls made to BMC emergency call centre but after the emergency no one bothers to find a permanent solution. Verma's shop is in lane 5 and 6 of the colony.
Last week's pre-monsoon showers too, led to flooding as many of the drains were chocked. "Much of it is manmade. The rest is up to the rain gods," he said.
In 2006 and again in 2016 after heavy rain boats had to be operated in the area for relief and rescue operations. Experts say a solution to the problem is only possible with reduced inflow of sewage into the Patra nallah from different parts of the city.
Bhopal railway station and adjoining Chandbadh area too have been trouble spots for the BMC during monsoons. Drains overflowing towards Ashoka Garden has caused major waterlogging in the past, partially because of being clogged with garbage inflow. Dwarka Nagar, Shankararcharya Colony and Semra areas are listed as most venerable. Patra nallah flows through two zones - zone 10 and 11. It has majorly impacted residents in low lying areas in Aishbagh. A whole floor of Janata quarters is on the low-lying side and is inundated with water, in short spells of rain.
