Ammonia is obtained industrially by the HABER PROCESS, which is based on the direct combination of nitrogen and hydrogen.
N2 + 3H2 = 2NH3.
The process involves mixing nitrogen and hydrogen to the volume ratio of 1:3 at a relatively high pressure of about 200 atm and passed over a catalyst of finely divided iron mixed with alumina at a temperature of 450¤C.
