It is also known as leaving the land fallow.

Some farmers follow this process of leaving a piece of land uncultivated for one or more seasons, so that it regains its fertility for the next season. The fallow period also gets rid of pests from the field.

During this time when the field lies empty without any crop, weeds that grow in it are burnt down and the ash, mixed back into the soil. This is also the time when natural fertilisers like cow dung, green leaves etc. are mixed and added to the field. Such natural fertilisers like ash, cow dung, green leaves etc. enrich the soil and help it regains its fertility for the next season.
