In a food chain, the producers are autotrophs since they are not dependent on another living organism for food but prepare their own.

The word autotrophs root from 'self' and 'food'. Plants, algae, bacteria are autotrophs.

They synthesize complex organic nutrient compounds like carbohydrates, proteins, fats from simpler inorganic elements and compounds like carbon dioxide, water etc., with the help of light energy or chemical energy through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis, and classify them accordingly as photoautotrophs or chemoautotrophs.
