Noise is a pollutant, a long exposure which affects our health adversely. Noise map of any place gets changed in case of expansion of the existing projects, increase in population, transport and building activities etc. or addition of new projects. Since the country is developing fast, cities are growing and prosperity is on the increase, there is a strong need for noise impact studies in the country at all vulnerable places.

The objectives of the present investigation are:

To assess the impact of noise pollution on urban environment/population

To work out possible preventive measures to ease the adverse long range effect of urban noise pollution.

To propagate the need for incorporating Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies with normal expansion activities/new projects.

The methodology adopted in the present study comprised of following steps:

The urban environment noise scenario was divided into groups where there was excessive/predominant noise due to one of the factors like traffic noise, commerical noise and industrial noise.
Measurements of continuous hourly noise levels were made at a number of
selected places in each group.

Measurements of equivalent noise level(Leq) were also made at many traffic junctions, near commercial and market centres, in the industrial area, in thickly populated areas and in the public parks and slightly remote places.
Hourly and day-night noise levels, traffic noise index and noise pollution levels were computed.
From the acquired data analytical studies were made for the predominant source of noise and excessively noisy hours of the day.
