ON THE GRASSHOPPER AND THE CRICKET

i) Brief Introduction:

The poem depicts that nature is never silent and beautiful in all seasons not excluding the hot summer and cold winter. Nature is never silent, when one retires the other is always there to take its place.

ii) Poem Summary:

The grasshopper and the cricket each symbolize the everlasting and joyous mood of nature, but in different seasons and opposite conditions. The cricket is shown as lively and cheerful; he is ‘never done with his delights as he runs ‘from hedge to hedge’, only stopping to rest when he is ‘tired out with fun’. The cricket takes over his task in winter when the cold weather has ‘wrought a silence’ and forced the creatures of the earth to seek shelter and solitude on a ‘lone winter evening’. Though the cricket too is forced indoors by the weather, his song gets louder as he gets warmer (the cricket’s song, in warmth increasing ever).

iii) Poet:

John Keats (1795-1821), belongs to the second generation of Romantic poets. His poetry is characterized by elaborate word choice and sensuous imagery. This is most notable in his Great Odes which remain among the finest poems in English Literature.

iv) Conclusion:

The luxuries and delights being referred to here are the warmth of the weather and the abundance of freshly cut grass, which the grasshopper enjoys in the summer. He has the luxury of carrying on the work of nature in summer, as he is happy and cheerful and singing his songs, while all the other animals are quietly hiding from the scorching heat. The poet creates an atmosphere of a silent, lonely winter when most creatures are quiet and hibernating. The phrases ‘lone winter evening’ and ‘frost has wrought a silence’ bring this imagery to life.
