The little gorilla N’Pongo had a grave
courteous manner and a sober expression that made the author’s mother and wife
like him instantly. However, the gorilla was actually far from this. By the
time his cage had come and N’Pongo had to be taken to it, he had created more
than enough damage to the guest room that appeared to have been turned upside
down.
N’Pongo did not like to sip his milk from a stainless steel dish. Rather, he loved to drink it straight from a bottle by holding it between his hands and dropping it to the floor when he was done.

Gerald Durrell wrote the Gorilla in the Guest room. It was written in the year 1962. Somebody sold him the gorilla, and it was named N’Pongo.
Here the “N” is silent, and it is pronounced as Pongo. The animal had a good behavior and also had a mate named Nandy.
