Soft water is water that has low calcium and magnesium. It could be water that started with very low total soluble ions (snow melt, NWT tundra, mountain lakes). OR water that started with high dissolved ions (including high calcium and magnesium) but the calcium and magnesium has been removed and replaced with sodium via water softener
