Anomalous behaviour of nitrogen: I)Nitrogen differ from of the members of this group due to its small size, highelectronegativity, high ionisation enthalpy and non-availability of d orbitals. pπ -pπ multiple bonds with itself and with other elements having small size and high electronegativity(e.g., C, O).

(1) Nitrogen form ppie-ppie mutiple bond, other elements of this group do not form.

(2) It forms diatomic molecule with triple bond.

(3) Catenation tendency is weaker in nitrogen than others.

(4) N2 is unreactive in its elemental state.

(5) Due to absence of d-orbitals in the valence shell it cannot form dpie-ppie multiple bond.
