According to the protoplanet hypothesis, several years back a massive cloud of dust and gas that had a minimum of 10 billion kilometers made its way to space. With the passage of time, the gravitation pull of the earth caused its diameter to get reduced. Another reason why the diameter may have lessened is that a passing star exploded. Because of the shrinkage, the cloud rotated faster than before. Based on the hypothesis, solar systems originated in rotating disks made of dust with a coating of ice derived from frozen gases. This eventually led to the formation of planets.
