Acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity.

which means there has to be a change in velocity with respect to time in order to have acceleration.

And if there's a change in velocity then there must be on inital velocity at which the object started and there has to another final velocity at which the body either stopped or we just igrored it cause we didn't needed that.

Now,

according to this explanation
(change in velocity)/(time) = acceleration,m

And our velocity has changed from Intial to final

Thereofore

acceleration = (final veloctiy-initial veloctiy )/ time

Hence,

A=(v-u)/t

(Note: It is not necessary that final velocity will always be greater than inital velocity)
