We know that a conservative force is that force in which the path taken by the body doesn't matter in the calculation of work done.
In case of gravity, the force acts between the center of mass of the object and the C.O.M. of Earth. Hence any horizontal work done on the object would not account to the gravitational work done. Hence the gravitational work is conservative.
On the other hand frictional work done increases with the path covered by the object, even if the frictional force remains constant.

Answer:

A force is said to be conservative ,when work done by or against the force in moving a body from one point to another in is same for all paths between the two points. In adddition, work done by a conservative force along a closed path is always zero. A force, which does not obey the above two characteristics is said to be a non conservative force. For example, gravitational forces and electrostatic forces are conservative forces on the contrary, force of friction is a non conservative force.
