Many introductory physics books just write that potential energy of a body of mass m at a height h as Ug=mgh. However, they never show how this was derived. I'm interested in knowing this derivation – if possible, avoiding calculus.

Answer:
Explanation:
potential energy is the work done to take a body for certain height
work done=force*displacement
W=mg*h
W=mgh
as the worh done=mgh potential energy p.e given as
P.E=mgh
hence prooved,,
