If possible, let us assume

2+ root 5 is a rational number.

2+ root 5= p/q where p,q∈z,q not equals to 0

2− q/p =− root 5

2q−p /q =− root 5

⇒− root 5 is a rational number

∵2q−p /q is a rational number

But − root 5 is not a rational number.

∴ Our supposition 2+ root 5 is a rational number is wrong.⇒2+ root 5 is an irrational number.
