He is the fatalistic hero of the story because after leaving his native hometown that is San Carlos because of the artillery fire, he is still worried about the fate of his animals which were two goats, four pair of pigeons and one cat. He is more worried about his animals' fate than his own fate . He is not worried about the cat and the pigeons because the cat will escape from the place as well as the pigeons are able to itselves too. But he is worried about the life of the two goats as nothing could save them for getting slaughtered. So, he remained at the bridge to show his anger, tension and sadness for the situation around him as he had no relation in causing and Deserving the pain of the war..
